Academic Excellence Scholarships

Pending appropriation of State funds, scholarships for Academic Excellence will be awarded to top high school seniors in June 2018. North Collins Jr/Sr High School will select the three (3) top students using the Rank in Class Method.  These students will be chosen using class rank at the end of their junior year.

Erie Community College offers many scholarships which may be accessed on the ECC website. Click on the quick links drop down box and then click on scholarship opportunities. The scholarship packet will display the criteria for each scholarship available.

In addition, there are a number of local scholarships available to graduating seniors. Please click here to access these scholarships; all applications are due by Friday, April 5.

Below are local, regional and national scholarships which may be of interest to you. In most cases, applications are available in the Guidance Office for anyone interested. Each scholarship has a different deadline, so please pay close attention to those dates to ensure your application is received in time. 



We the Students Essay Contest

We the Students Essay Contest is open to US citizens who are no older than 19 and no younger than 14. 

Cash prizes for scholarship winners are:

National Grand Prize - $5,000
Runners Up – six at $1,250 each
Honorable Mention – eight at $500 each

Scalp and Blade Scholarship

$2,500 per year, renewable for a total of 4 years. Scholarship total if $10,000 and is available to a male senior student who demonstrates outstanding academic accomplishments in terms of grades and college entrance exams, extracurricular activities, community involvement as well as financial need.

WNY Safety Conference, Inc. Scholarship

The Board of Western New York Safety Conference is offering college scholarships of up to $1,500 to qualified high school students.  Financial need will be taken into consideration when awarding scholarships.  Applications are available in the high school guidance office.

Deadline: Application must be postmarked by January 28, 2019.

 


American Association of University Women (AAUW) Scholarship

Two scholarships of $5,000 will be awarded. Criteria:

  • Girls attending Erie or Niagara County high school are eligible.

  • Must attend full time any accredited college (two or four year) in the fall.

  • Grade point average of at least 95%.

Empire State Potato Growers, Inc. Scholarship

The Empire State Potato Growers, Inc. is pleased to announce the availability of a $2,000 scholarship ($500/academic year for up to 4 consecutive years) to students pursuing a college education which will benefit the agricultural industry.

The Benjamin Milak Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 1994 to honor Ben Milak who had lost his life to leukemia.  Initiated by several of Ben’s teachers, the scholarship honors his memory and is meant to be a reflection of who he was.  It is awarded annually to a graduating senior(s) who like Ben struggles with hearing loss, a learning disability or who has battled cancer.   The recipient must possess a realistic career goal, be community minded and have a respect for the natural world.

The Cristin Ann Bambino Memorial Scholarship

Applicant must be a special education student who is college bound. 

The goal of this scholarship is to reward a student who has worked through his or her special challenges to complete high school and gain acceptance into a college or university. Seven regional winners will receive a $3,000 award, one second prize winner will receive a $4,000 award and one statewide winner will receive a $5,000 award.

The Paul Jensen Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is available to a student who has excelled in design in his or her high school career. It will be awarded to two individuals on a statewide basis.  The overall winner will receive a $5,000 award and the runner up will receive a $3,000 award.

John Goncalves Student Humanitarian Scholarship

This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior who is able to demonstrate a record of involvement and work for a cause or organization that actively promotes social justice, equal opportunity, relief of human suffering or similar aspirations generally understood to be within the meaning of humanitarian activity. The overall winner will receive a $5,000 award and the runner up will receive a $3,000 award.

Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo Scholarship

Since 2000, over $29 million in scholarships have been awarded by the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo. A strong preference will be given to students who are Pell grant eligible and attending school in WNY.  Students must have at least a "C" average or 2.0 GPA and be accepted to a non-profit, United States Department of Ed. accredited school for full-time, undergraduate study.

Gerard J. Buckenmeyer FASNY Volunteer Scholarship

Applicants must be actively participating as a volunteer firefighter or junior firefighter to apply for the twenty-five $1,500 scholarships available this year.

Norman F. Locher Memorial Scholarship

This $1,000 scholarship is presented in the memory of Norman F. Locher, Past President of the Erie County Fire District Officers Association. 

Eligibility:

  • Be a high school senior who has exemplified community involvement in the County of Erie.
  • Preference will be given to students who assist in the emergency services, and are matriculating in the Emergency Services fields of Fire or EMS.
  • Demonstrate at least a “C” average throughout high school.
  • Show evidence of acceptance to a two or four year college program.
  • Be a resident of an area served by a volunteer fire company.

Arthur E. Cosgrove Memorial Scholarship

This $1,000 scholarship is presented in the memory of Arthur E. Cosgrove Past Treasurer of the Erie County Fire District Officers Association. 

Eligibility:

  • Be a high school senior who has exemplified community involvement in the County of Erie.
  • Preference will be given to students who assist in the emergency services, and are matriculating in the Emergency Services fields of Fire or EMS.
  • Demonstrate at least a “C” average throughout high school.
  • Show evidence of acceptance to a two or four year college program.

Arthur Blachowski Memorial Scholarship

A $1,000 scholarship in memory of Arthur Blachowski, past president of the Erie County Fire District Officers Association is available.  Criteria as follows:

Ned Carter Scholarship

The Association of Fire Districts of the State of New York is pleased to announce the “Ned Carter” Scholarship availability of four (4) $1,500 scholarships to New York State High School Seniors who will be graduating in June 2019.  The student must be related to a firefighter, be a firefighter, or be an explorer in a fire department, that is a current paid member in good standing of the Association of Fire Districts of the State of New York.

Amherst Garden Club Scholarship

The Amherst Garden Club will offer a scholarship of $1,500 to a student pursuing a two or four-year degree in an accredited college/trade or technical school and majoring in conservation, environmental studies, floriculture, forestry, horticulture, land management, landscape design, urban planning and/or related fields.  Two references will be required in addition to a high school transcript. All monies awarded will be issued to the college bursar.

Work Ethic Scholarship Program

The 2019 Work Ethic Scholarship Program officially opens on Monday, January 28, 2019. Peter P. Tycz II Memorial Scholarship

A $250 scholarship is available to graduating seniors who meet the following criteria:

  • reside in Niagara or Erie County
  • has a relative who is/was a veteran (reservists who have completed 180 continuous days of service are considered veterans.)
  • shows a unique blend of academic achievement and community service
  • anticipates enrollment in an accredited program of higher education beginning in the fall of 2019

The Matthew R. Row Scholarship Foundation

This scholarship was created in honor of Matthew R. Row who was tragically killed in an in an industrial accident at his engineering job at the age of 39.  His co-workers have funded this scholarship for students from Western New York, like Matt's children, who have also lost a parent.

Between 2016 and 2018, The Mathew R. Row Scholarship Foundation has distributed $20,000 in scholarships and will continue the mission in the 2019 academic year by awarding four scholarships.

Erie County Agricultural Society & Erie County Fair Annual Scholarships

The Erie County Agricultural Society will award up to $20,000 in scholarship funds this June, 2019. Applicants must have participated in the Erie County Fair.  Participation includes, but is not limited to exhibiting in any department, marching band, employee, concessionaires, etc.  Scholarships are OPEN to all students based on participation.  Agriculture career choices will be given additional consideration.

Lawrence D. Bell Niagara Frontier Chapter of the Air Force Association Scholarship

This $1,000 scholarship is open to students who have maintained an 85% or above grade point average, have participated in extra-curricular activities, and demonstrated outstanding leadership traits.  Applications are available in the guidance office.

Horatio Alger Scholarship

The Horatio Alger Association seeks to assist students who have demonstrated integrity, perseverance in overcoming adversity, strength of character, financial need, a good academic record, commitment to pursue a college education and a desire to contribute to society.  The Association will award 1020 scholarships in 2019 with a maximum award amount of $2,500.

Criteria:

  • Have completed high school by Spring.
  • Be enrolled in a 2 year or less career or technical degree/certificate program in Fall that will lead to employment.
  • Attend a not-for-profit post-secondary institution.
  • Demonstrate financial need; applicants must be Pell Grant eligible. 
  • Be under the age of 30. 
  • Be a US citizen.

Nicholas Patteerson Perpetual Fun 2008 Scholarship 

The academic scholarships provided by the Nicholas Patterson Perpetual Fund were established under the Last Will and Testament of the late Nicholas D. Patterson. Mr. Patterson was a self-educated man, who during the course of his lifetime (he lived to 103) developed an admiration as well as an appreciation for those who studied hard and worked to try and achieve their goals through education and citizenship. The Patterson Fund scholarships are not intended to pay a student's entire tuition, but to help lessen their financial burden. The scholarships are usually in the amount of $2000 and may be used for expenses at the student's discretion.
